What is the name of the circumpolar constellation that takes up the largest area in the sky?

Hi Jillian!

The correct answer is Ursa Major.

To qualify, a constellation must not only be large, but also well away from the equator.

The largest is Ursa Major, at 1,280 sq. degrees. Ursa Major is not the largest constellation in the sky. That honor goes to Hydra, at 1,303 sq. degrees, followed by Virgo at 1,294. Both of those, however, cross the equator and are never circumpolar at any latitude.

All of Ursa Major is circumpolar from anyplace north of 62 degrees North, the latitude of central Norway and much of Alaska and the Canadian Northwest Territories. The Big Dipper never sets from northern temperate latitudes.

Draco, at 1,083 sq. degrees is second.

What's the largest Southern Hemisphere circumpolar constellation? Centaurus, 1,060 sq. degrees. Centaurus never sets from places south of 60 degrees South and its great southern pointer stars, Alpha Centauri and Agena, are circumpolar from south temperate latitudes. It beats out runner-up Puppis at just 673 sq. degrees. What is the name of the circumpolar constellation that takes up the largest area in the sky?orion? What is the name of the circumpolar constellation that takes up the largest area in the sky?Southern Hemisphere Pavo
