I found a group of stars that is quite interesting and reminds me of something great. Is there anywhere I can go online or in person to name a constellation? How do I go about naming a constellation if possible????Are you certain it's not already a part of a constellation? (Just to make sure!)
The International Astronomical Union is officially in charge of naming celestial bodies (always under catalogue numbers); there are other organizations out there that allow you to pay money to name a star yourself, but nothing is official--they just send you a certificate of some sort. I wouldn't consider that worthwhile.
So, unfortunately, there is nowhere you can go to legitimately and officially name a constellation yourself. If you can't officially name a mere star yourself, a constellation is really out of the question. :(How do I go about naming a constellation if possible????
While 88 constellations that cover the entire sky are already named, and stars have designations down to quite faint ones, there are still "asterisms" or groups of stars inside constellations composed of just a few stars.
There is Brocchi's cluster (the Coathanger), Stephan's Quintet (five galaxies), the waterfall called Kemble's Cascade, and quite a few more.
Perhaps if you contacted enough people in the astronomy field, they might take to the name you give this group (if not already taken). How do I go about naming a constellation if possible????International astronomical union responsible for naming constellations had already named all the sky in to 88 constellations. So no chance to give a new name.
If you finds an asteroid, you can suggest a name and if you find a new comet you can get it named after you.How do I go about naming a constellation if possible????
In order to name a new constellation, you need to pay off the International Astronautical Union. I would guess that a few million dollars per voting member should do the trick. There are about 10,000 members, so $20 billion is all you need.
-- No, wait ... you only need to convince 51%. You need only $10 billion. Isn't that a relief? How do I go about naming a constellation if possible????Sorry you are several thousands of years too late. Many Constellations were named in ancient times by the Greeks, Romans, and Arabs.
