There are 13 zodiac constellations. How come Ophiuchus, the 13th constellation, isn't an astrological sign?

Modern constellation boundaries were established around 1930, putting part of the ecliptic in Ophiuchus. The astrologers don't care, because the concept of the astrological zodiac is to divide the ecliptic into twelve equal segments. These signs are named after the constellations they aligned with in the time of Ptolemy, who invented "modern" astrology about 1850 years ago, but really have nothing to do with the constellations. Since Ptolemy, precession of the equinoxes has shifted the alignment by about 25 degrees.There are 13 zodiac constellations. Astrologers also don't take into account the precession of the equinoxes - the sun has moved one constellation west since the signs were set up 2000 years ago.

I was born in June, right in the middle of the Gemini date range. But when I was born the sun was actually in Cancer.

faesson: as far as I know the sun stays within the usual 13 zodiacal constellations.

However, there are 21 constellations in which some of the planets can enter. With the moon, able to enter Auriga, this makes 22 zodiacal constellations. Jean Meuus lists them in one of his books.

It is true that the Sun passes thru Ophiuchus, but isnt it also true that the Sun clips the corner of several Non-Zodiacal constellations?



As astrology is much less important than (and even less significant than) the color of goose crap, what difference does it make?
