I've tried numerous star charts, didn't work. I'm becoming very angry at him because of this!!!!How can I convince my friend that the Pleiades constellation IS NOT the Little Dipper? The Pleiades is not a constellation at all. Nor is the little dipper. They are both asterisms. The Pleiades are part of Taurus and the little dipper is part of Ursa Minor. If your firend refuses to believe information like this

then I guess you need to show him for real. Ursa Minor is always out. Polaris or the North Star is part of the constellation. You can find The Pleiades and Taurus by first finding Orion. They are in the southern sky at about 8 pm. Unfortunately there is a full moon out, in Gemini, which might make Taurus tricky to find but you could also look for Mars which is in Taurus. Mars is the brightest red "star" nearest to the moon. The moon,Mars and the Pleiades are almost in a straight line (tonight). If you have a pair of binoculars show your friend the Pleiades through it. Good luck! How can I convince my friend that the Pleiades constellation IS NOT the Little Dipper?
maybe show him the Pleaides when it is near the eastern or western horizon and explaining that the constellation with the north star (little dipper) is always in the north, and not near the horizon...think this might help? How can I convince my friend that the Pleiades constellation IS NOT the Little Dipper? How about you show him on the Internet? Here are the corresponding links in Wikipedia.
Another argument is the size of them. The Pleiades are small enough that when you can see them, it is pretty hard to tell the difference between its components, whereas it is perfectly possible to recognize the Little Dipper. How can I convince my friend that the Pleiades constellation IS NOT the Little Dipper?
Simple:
Just step outside tonight or on the next clear night and show him where the big dipper is in the eastern sky while the Pleiades are high in the southern sky above Taurus.
BTW, the Pleiades (M45) are not a constellation, but an open Star Cluster. It is part of the constellation Taurus.
AdolphHow can I convince my friend that the Pleiades constellation IS NOT the Little Dipper?Well you could download Stellarium and use the "Find" facility to find both the Pleiades and the Little Dipper. He will be able to see then that Mars and Orion are in one view but not in the other.
After that, just give up...its not worth loosing sleep over!
